[15:04] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Some one asked mu slave where the scribe caste codes come form

[15:05] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Back in 2008 eight scribes met for a few months and reading through the books came up with set of cor principles we operate under

[15:06] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Those notes are on the botom of what i gave you

CASTE CODES

[15:07] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): then a decade later a leader of the caste, Yoda Mac tavish,  revised them

[15:07] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Intro my Yoda,

Each caste has a set of "codes" which helps them maintain a series of beliefs and rules for its members. Members hold to these "codes" as they practice their profession. Each caste's code is different and deals mainly with matters of specific interest to that caste.

[15:07] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Kati refereced following the codes daily

[15:08] Kati Evans: smiles

[15:08] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Some argue there is no code, only the warriors have codes

[15:08] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): but we have this

[15:08] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): The ethical teachings of Gor, which are independent of the claims and propositions of the Initiates, amount to little more than the Caste Codes - collections of sayings whose origins are lost in antiquity.

[15:09] Dexter Winters (sytheking1) is offline.

[15:09] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): We do have ethical teachings we live by,

[15:09] Fogaban: The Caste of Scribes have codes, this is evident in two quotes

[15:09] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Or should

[15:09] Fogaban: "You are fortunate," I said, "that my caste codes discourage robbing armed warriors."

Mariners of Gor     Book 30     Page 546

"I see no hope," said Hemartius.

"Fight then all the more desperately, without hope," I said.

"I know my codes," he said.

[15:10] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): why look at them.the cites trust us to help them run the cites.

[15:11] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): And some in our caste i hate to say it, do not live up to their trust

[15:13] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): The Preamble of the Scribes’ Codes

“I am of the Caste of Scribes.

I shall guard the written word, for in it lies the memory of men.

I shall seek knowledge, for ignorance is the enemy of truth.

I shall act with integrity, for without it, learning is but vanity.

I shall judge with objectivity, for the law is greater than desire.

I shall discharge my duty with courage, for the truth often walks in peril.

Thus do I swear, by ink and by scroll, to be faithful to the Codes of the Scribes.

[15:14] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Itt now has a preable that sumerizes what our code is

[15:15] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Education : the scribes are well trained and value education

[15:16] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): i shutter when scirbes say they should be promoted and they then say they were born into the caste,

[15:16] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Wagon Peoples, of all those on Gor that I know, are the only ones that have a

clan of torturers, trained as carefully as scribes or physicians, in the arts of

[15:16] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): we study it, like the Physicians

[15:17] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): With the decline in the libraries of Gor, it needs to recognized that Scribes protected the scrolls, even if the could not understand the words in the hope others would. We are the protectors of the written scrolls.

[15:17] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): If i see one more city say we go to the internet to learn gor  i will screem
[15:18] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): "There will be many scrolls to examine and catalog when the city is rebuilt," observed the Older Tarl. "Of course," he added, "I might do the work myself!"
Torm shook with horror. "Never!" he cried. (Priest Kings of Gor
[15:18] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): “for he was a scribe and it is the way of scribes to love the written word and keep it from harm, “(Priest Kings of Gor)

[15:19] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): sadly other castes are trying to do our work

[15:19] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): *** My Chamber Slave's accent had been pure High Caste Gorean though I could not place the city. Probably her caste had been that of the Builders or Physicians, for had her people been Scribes I would have expected a greater subtlety of inflections, the use of less common grammatical cases; and had her people been of the Warriors I would have expected a blunter speech, rather belligerently simple, expressed in great reliance on the indicative mood and, habitually, a rather arrogant refusal to venture beyond the most straightforward of sentence structures.

 Priest-Kings of Gor   Book 3   Page 52

[15:20] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Does that look like to you that warriors normally are magistrates

[15:20] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): ***"Were you truly of the scribes?" asked the man.

"Yes," said Inge, startled.

"The refinement of your accent," he said, "suggested the scribes."

"Thank you, Master," said Inge, lowering her head.

"She is excellent merchandise," said the man. "She has the intelligence, and education of the scribe, and yet she is obviously an exquisite and well-trained female slave."

[15:22] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): The officer pointed to a distant cylinder. "The Cylinder of Justice," he said. "The execution will take place as soon as the girl can be presented." The cylinder was white, a color Goreans often associate with impartiality. Tarnsman of Gor     Book 1

[15:22] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): It was what the romans also wore

[15:23] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Why the purple

[15:23] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): In Ancient Greek and Roman societies, there are many early examples of purple being associated with justice and the legal system. Roman magistrates would wear specifically demarcated purple-striped togas to denote their prominence and authority. The purple stripes visually communicated that they had been granted powers by the Roman Emperor to adjudicate cases and dispense justice. https://www.colorwithleo.com/what-is-the-color-associated-with-justice/

[15:24] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): PROPRIETY

[15:24] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Merriam-Webster defines the word “propriety” as, “correctness in manners or behavior; the quality or state of being proper.” So, let’s look at what the books have to say about propriety:

[15:25] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): **"Many in Venna," she said, "as I understand it, are alarmed at the killing, and the mysterious footprints. Some think it is an omen or warning. The archon is consulting augurs, to take the signs."

I stood in the sand, waiting for her.

"They will concern themselves, surely, too, with legalities, and such," she said. "For example, those in the black chain who are not criminals, and for whom Ionicus does not have prisoner papers, will presumably be at least temporarily removed from the vicinity. That would mean many of the masters on our chain."

I nodded. This seemed understandable. The archon in Venna would be interested in putting his house in order before the taking of the auspices. He would doubtless regard it as politic, at least from the point of view of soothing possible apprehensions in his constituency, to become a bit more scrupulous about proprieties, at least in so serious a situation.

[15:26] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): ***Once safely down Torm came over to me and reached up and touched my shoulder.

"I believed you," he said.

"I know," I said, and gave his sandy-haired head a rough shake. He was, after all, a Scribe, and had the proprieties of his caste to observe.

[15:37] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): There’s nothing wrong with developing caste codes for Scribes, especially when they’re grounded in the books. We can draw inspiration from figures like Torm and others—gleaning what we can to shape something meaningful. A shared set of codes wouldn’t hurt, as long as they’re built through consensus. I think it’s time we open that conversation.

It’s also worth distinguishing between caste codes and profession-specific codes. As Scribes, we hold a common identity, but our roles vary—Cartographers, Historians, Magistrates, Record Keepers, and more. We are Scribes first, then practitioners of our chosen specialties.

And let’s not forget the Free Women who choose not to engage in caste work. That’s a valid choice, and it doesn’t make them any less part of the caste—they’re simply non-practicing Scribes. As for those who walk the line between order and mischief? They add flavor to the mix and keep things lively!”

[15:37] Drew Barnard shrugs ... "teacher, if evidence was brought to me, I would task the Archeon to investigate further and determine the course of action. I must respect and empower my caste brethren in their roles. If I were of a different mind than my Archeon, I could act personally but it is not my role to override the findings of my duly appointed officers."

[15:38] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Good answer

[15:38] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): but we do need standard and the books give them to us

[15:38] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): Lucy of Onli used to say the scribes are the blood of a city

[15:40] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): A sick city due to bad leadership is not a good thing, But that is up to cites , not use and those of you who lead the caste in cites to do

[15:40] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2): not me or any org

[15:41] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I do not seek to erase history  ( the codes of yesteryear)  but to flesh it out  more.

[15:42] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): we are doing Ambassador right?

[15:42] Drew Barnard: And, teacher, ultimately it is up to those who, ooc, finance the cities in which we reside and RP. My Ubar is inclined to make appointments, even within my caste, and to assign guilt or innocence. As ever, he who controls the presses controls the truths.

[15:49] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): The Role of the Ambassador:

Ambassadors serve as the primary diplomats between cities and are tasked with negotiating peace, trade agreements, military alliances, and resolving conflicts.

Students learn how to maintain composure, act as intermediaries, and skillfully use negotiation tactics to safeguard the interests of their city.

Captivity and Negotiation:

One of the core lessons of the course revolves around the capture of high-ranking dignitaries, free women, and key figures during raids or warfare.

The Ambassador’s role is to negotiate the release of captives, such as Ubars, Tatrixes, or companions of high officials, by either arranging for ransom or making difficult political decisions.

The course examines situations where the Ambassador may have to negotiate under pressure, sometimes involving large sums of money, valuable resources, or difficult demands from the enemy.

Cultural and Geographical Considerations:

The course explores how different cities and regions within Gor have varying

[15:49] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  customs, laws, and political structures. Victoria emphasizes the importance of understanding these distinctions, such as the different veils worn by free women or how a Jarl's Woman holds authority in northern regions.

The geographical divide of Gor is central to how power dynamics, traditions, and relationships between cities are shaped, impacting negotiations.

[15:50] Abraham Jacobson (abrahamjacobs2) is offline.

[15:52] shanni (shannondoa) is offline.

[15:52] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): Diplomatic Contracts and Treaties:

Students are trained in the formalities of drafting various diplomatic documents like trade agreements, military alliances, safe passage agreements, peace treaties, and declarations of war.

The course includes practical assignments where students are tasked with drafting contracts, based on simulated or real roleplay scenarios, to solidify their understanding of the negotiation process.

The Art of Negotiation:

A significant part of the course is dedicated to teaching how to negotiate effectively. Students learn to balance between persuasion, respect, and maintaining the dignity of all parties involved.

Key steps in negotiation include understanding the interests of each party, staying calm under pressure, and working toward mutually beneficial resolutions.

The importance of patience and tact is underscored throughout, with techniques for diffusing anger and ensuring that all parties feel heard and respected.

Role of the Ambassador in Crisis Situations:

The Ambassador

[15:52] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  is often the go-between when cities are in crisis, such as during a hostage situation or when important figures are captured.

The course teaches students how to mediate conflicts, communicate with hostile parties, and ensure that they are able to maintain or restore peace without compromising their city’s integrity or the safety of its citizens.

As Ambassadors, students are not only representing their city but also embodying leadership. The course explores how an Ambassador must remain impartial, calm, and strategic when navigating disputes and negotiations.

The Ambassador Masterclass blends roleplay scenarios with real-world diplomatic principles, preparing students for the high-stakes world of Gorean politics. It equips them with the skills to serve as the primary negotiator in times of peace and war, ensuring the protection and growth of their city. Victoria Forstander’s teachings emphasize the importance of grace, tact, and strategic thinking, which are essential for any Ambassador seeking to succeed in the complex world of Gor.

Lesson 1: The Role of the Ambassador

The first lesson in the Ambassador Masterclass focuses on the role and responsibilities of an ambassador in the world of Gor. Ambassadors serve as the key diplomatic figures between cities, tasked with maintaining peaceful relations, negotiating

[15:54] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  trade, and resolving conflicts. This lesson will explore what it means to be an ambassador, how to fulfill the role effectively, and the essential traits an ambassador must possess to be successful in the often perilous political landscape of Gor.

Key Objectives:

Understand the core duties of an ambassador.

Learn how to represent your city in diplomatic matters.

Analyze the qualities and skills required to be an effective ambassador.

1.1 The Ambassador as the Diplomatic Face of the City

Ambassadors are the living representation of their cities. Their actions, speech, and decisions directly impact the perception and future of their city’s relations with others. Key Objectives:

Analyze the qualities and skills required to be an effective ambassador.

1.1 The Ambassador as the Diplomatic Face of the City

Ambassadors are the living representation of their cities. Their actions, speech, and decisions directly impact the perception and future of their city’s relations with others. As intermediaries, ambassadors must be skilled in communication,

[16:00] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  negotiation, and maintaining a calm demeanor even under stress.

[16:01] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): In Tarnsman of Gor, John Norman writes:

"The duty of the ambassador is to the city, not to the person, not to the individual. He must rise above his emotions, his desires, and his personal vendettas. The city, after all, is eternal." (Tarnsman of Gor, Chapter 3)

This quote highlights a key point: an ambassador must always prioritize the interests of their city over their personal feelings. This neutrality and objectivity are crucial to maintaining diplomacy. The ambassador represents the city’s values, goals, and ambitions, often making difficult decisions that may not align with their own preferences.

1.2 Qualities of a Successful Ambassador

To be an effective ambassador, one must possess several key qualities:

Patience: An ambassador must be patient, especially when negotiating with rival cities or contentious factions. Diplomacy takes time, and many matters require careful, thoughtful discussion to reach a peaceful resolution.

Diplomatic Skill: Ambassadors must have excellent negotiation skills.

[16:01] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  Knowing when to speak, when to remain silent, and how to frame requests or demands is essential.

Emotional Control: Ambassadors must maintain control over their emotions, especially in difficult or hostile environments. Emotional responses can be seen as weakness or instability, which could jeopardize the city’s interests.

[16:01] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): (thank you, Davor and Drew)

[16:02] K A E L A (yenniferrivia) is online.

[16:03] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): "The ambassador must be calm. It is not his emotions that are to be felt, but those of the city he represents. His mission is to preserve peace, not to provoke war." (Assassin of Gor, Chapter 7)

This reinforces the idea that an ambassador must keep their personal emotions in check and focus on the greater good of the city they represent.

1.3 The Ambassador’s Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of an ambassador are:

Negotiating Treaties and Agreements: Whether it is a trade deal, a peace treaty, or an alliance, the ambassador is responsible for negotiating terms that benefit their city while ensuring the other party feels respected.

Maintaining Relationships: The ambassador must ensure that diplomatic relationships are kept intact, fostering goodwill and understanding between cities, even if tensions arise.

Conflict Resolution: If a dispute arises between cities, the ambassador often steps in to mediate, ensuring that conflict does not escalate into full-blown war.

In Outlaw of Gor, the role of

[16:03] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  the ambassador is explained further:

"The ambassador was not merely a messenger or a negotiator. He was a representative of his city, a symbol of its authority and power, and often the final word in a matter of peace or war." (Outlaw of Gor, Chapter 5)

This quote emphasizes the ambassador's symbolic role—more than just a diplomat, they are a figure of authority whose actions can sway the fate of their city.

[16:04] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino): 1.4 The Ambassador’s Relationship with the Ubar and Council

Ambassadors must maintain a close working relationship with the Ubar (or equivalent ruling authority) and the ruling council. They must be trusted to carry out the wishes of the city’s leaders, even in delicate situations.

In Tarnsman of Gor, the ambassador's role is further highlighted:

"An ambassador’s role is not to make decisions alone but to act on the will of the council and the Ubar. He is their voice, not their master." (Tarnsman of Gor, Chapter 10)

This passage underscores the importance of aligning with the political leadership and ensuring the ambassador’s personal judgment does not override the will of the city’s rulers.

1.5 Practical Application: Acting as an Ambassador

To put theory into practice, students will engage in roleplay exercises where they must assume the role of an ambassador and negotiate with another city. These exercises will involve:

Drafting a peace treaty.

Resolving a conflict between two

[16:04] Victoria Forstander (evavalentino):  cities.

Negotiating trade terms while ensuring the city’s interests are not compromised.

The goal of these activities is to hone students’ negotiation skills, help them remain calm under pressure, and develop a deeper understanding of the ambassador's diplomatic functions.

Conclusion

The first lesson emphasizes the critical role ambassadors play in maintaining peace, advancing their city's interests, and navigating the complexities of Gor’s political landscape. The ambassador must rise above personal emotions and act in the best interest of their city, utilizing patience, diplomacy, and strategic thinking. By understanding the ambassador’s responsibilities and qualities, students can begin to appreciate the delicate nature of diplomacy and the skill required to execute it successfully.
