Scribe Summit - Lecture 14: Role and tools of the Ambassador

Abraham was sick and Kar stepped in to fill the time slot.

[12:52] Drew Barnard: yes, that's fine with me ... I would be interested in any comments you may make based in your experience as an Ambassador

[12:53] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Thank you..  As for my experience.

[12:54] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran) entered chat range (11.23 m).

[12:55] Kati Evans: Tal, Trygg.

[12:56] Davor O'Donnell (davoroflaura) entered chat range (10.70 m).

[12:56] Huntsy Silverpath (huntsman.hinterland) is offline.

[12:56] Drew Barnard: The crowd grows!

[12:57] Huntsy Silverpath (huntsman.hinterland) is online.

[12:59] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): On Gor, the experience of being an ambassador differs significantly between men and women. For men, the role is generally easier to navigate, reflecting Gor’s male-dominated society. Women ambassadors, however, must remain constantly vigilant and cautious. It is commonly said that ambassadors enjoy immunity from detention or arrest—even when they find themselves in a city at war with their own. Yet, this protection is not universally guaranteed; laws and customs can vary widely from one city or region to another.    Some agree and some don't....  Do you agree?

[13:00] Charlotte Spicer (charlottefrees) is online.

[13:00] Astary Pendragon entered chat range (5.46 m).

[13:00] Drew Barnard: In my time as an Ambassador I never felt fear of arrest of even detention, but, it must be said, in neither city I served was I in my role during a time of war

[13:01] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Tal Trygg,  It was decided on that I'll pass out the notes that was given to me  and  I was asked about my experience as an Ambassador.

[13:02] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): "That is perfect. I will listen and learn"

[13:04] Firefly Doobie (firefly.doobie) is offline.

[13:04] Charlotte Spicer (charlottefrees) is offline.

[13:05] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): When I first became an Ambassador, many many moons ago,   I had to learn to bite my tongue..  To speak with determination with soft undertones.      Had to learn  a form of dance, not slave  dance,,  but a dance nontheless  that kept a collar from being about my neck.  It isn't easy being a  Free Woman .

[13:11] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I've had several discussions about power.  It was once said that Ambassadors have the power..  Maybe it is true  but  it is power that stays in check.     The Council, Ubar/ Ubara  or Administrator keeps the Ambassador s power in check..  Along with them  we do what is best for our Home Stone.

[13:11] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I'm not prepared for this.

[13:12] Drew Barnard "Truly, hearing of your personal experiences is of interest ... " ... looks around the room to the others ..."None would expect you to be prepared .. you were trust into this mere ehn ago!"

[13:15] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): You're doing wonderfully Kar.

[13:16] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): We are all in agreement that it is easier for men, yes?

[13:16] Davor O'Donnell (davoroflaura): would like to hear  your personal experiences

[13:16] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I can't imagine that it is not easier for men. It would be a very progressive government if it weren't

[13:17] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I've been dragged out ,  face stripped,   laughed at by men,  belittled.. I've been whipped, gagged...  shoved  in a sack  with dung.

[13:17] Drew Barnard: I think it could be said that everything about Gor - outside of Tharna - is easier for men

[13:18] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): Were you treated this way by men of your Home Stone?

[13:18] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): No, not by men I shared a Home Stone with.

[13:20] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): That's not tur,  Did get face stripped once by a man I shared a Home Stone with.    He  quickly apologized    but  I was  a record keeper at that time.

[13:21] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I  was rather brazen.. sharp tongue  and  went too far...  Lesson was learned.

[13:21] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): i see. Did any of the men of your Home Stone push back when you were named Ambassador?

[13:22] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): That behavior is to be expected from free women

[13:22] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Yes  there was one.  A Merchant.

[13:24] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran) shakes his head

[13:24] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): The merchant is a great at what he does.  Powerful even in his dealings.   He would have made an excellent Ambassador.  I did seek his council  when it came to trade.

[13:25] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I had nepotism on my side. I arrived at Two Scimitars a poor kalika player, and I ran into my long lost brother who needed an ambassador.
[13:26] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): Once I learned the skills for it, I discovered I had a knack for the work.
[13:26] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): Scimitars is a small isolated outpost.
[13:27] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I am interested to know how much actual authority you have as an ambassador.
[13:28] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): As an ambassador, I strongly encourage you to engage with merchants, cartographers, historians, and others—they hold valuable insights and information that can greatly aid your mission. Take the time to plan your travels carefully, using their knowledge to navigate wisely and effectively.
[13:28] Drew Barnard nods
[13:29] Kati Evans: Good point.
[13:30] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Depends on the Council  and or Ubar.  With their backing you can do anything.. Including War.
[13:30] zCS # [Mod] Hermine39 Resident [RP] re-attached their meter.
[13:31] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): Our commander is protective on matters of war. I can't enter into a defense alliance without his approval. Everything else, trade and cultural agreements, I have carte blanche
[13:31] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): We have to keep the Council and/or Ubar/Ubara/ Administrator in the loop  .. Does that mean informing them of everything?   Meaning how you gathered  the intel?
[13:32] Drew Barnard chuckles
[13:32] ƊάƓƓƐƦ  (kail.lefevre) is offline.
[13:32] Jon Julius Ƭɛɼɼợɼ (fresh.peppermint) is offline.
[13:32] Drew Barnard: I often think it best if none know how some information is obtained
[13:32] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): No, except in matters of war, they couldn't care less
[13:32] zCS # [Mod] Lilith Lindley [RP] re-attached their meter.
[13:33] zCS # [Mod] Xerberus Resident [Away] re-attached their meter.
[13:33] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I report it at a council meeting and that's that. The merchants are always engaged, because they would have to enact any trade agreements
[13:33] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I don't suggest to go out and declare war..  All those that need to be n the loop keep in the loop..  They might not  want to go to war.  It's all about doing what is best for our Home Stones.
[13:34] Drew Barnard nods
[13:34] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran) chuckles "Yes, indeed. In matters of defense, I have the Commander at my side
[13:34] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): What if you use a spy  . Would you tell them a spy was used?
[13:35] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I would tell my own people
[13:35] Drew Barnard: I would endeavour not to do do
[13:35] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): yes, certainly
[13:35] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran) smiles slyly
[13:35] Loki O'Dingautr Minotaur (souleater66) is offline.
[13:37] Drew Barnard: I strive to maintain a relationship where my peers accept that what I tell them is fact, or as near as I can determine, and is delivered in good faith to the Home Stone. I do not wish to be micromanaged or questioned. If the source is noteworthy I may include reference to them, as to add emphasis, but I do not typically make attributions otherwise. I have found that this has an additional benefit that people I seek information from will trust that I will keep my source private if they ask it to be so.
[13:38] Dallin (dallinpink) is offline.
[13:38] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): We differ for I wouldn't..   It's not to deceive  but  to keep others safe.  What is important is the intel.
[13:38] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I agree , Drew
[13:38] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): f I were ever to employ a spy under the guise of an ambassador, I would keep that knowledge strictly to myself. Should complications arise, my Ubar, the Council, or the Administrator could truthfully deny any involvement, preserving their honor and avoiding accountability.
[13:39] Drew Barnard: hear, hear
[13:39] Drew Barnard: we are buffers in that sense
[13:39] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Of course if it ever came to light.. I would be the one screwed.
[13:40] Drew Barnard chuckles
[13:40] Davor O'Donnell (davoroflaura): interesting
[13:41] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): That's a good point. never having employed one, I had not thought of deniability
[13:41] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Intel is important  and sometimes  getting the intel  during a war  can be difficult..    Which could mean using a spy.
[13:41] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Saying that strictly off the books.. 'laughs'
[13:42] Drew Barnard laughs
[13:46] Davor O'Donnell (davoroflaura): sure
[13:47] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Connect widely and build relationships with everyone you meet. Keep careful records of who’s who—knowledge is power. Stay informed at all times and leverage every resource available. Each caste brings unique strengths; understand and use their specialties wisely. Our negotiations are always for the sake of our Home Stone. Be vigilant—read between the lines and listen closely to what remains unspoken.
[13:52] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Based on the notecard that was sent my way.  There's a section on ' Scribal Slaves'...  I think the use of a scribe  is a personal choice. I've used a slave before but kept a limit on what the girl could do.   There's always a chance  that the girl gets kidnapped.   If she knows too much  then that information goes with her..  Imagine if your plans get ruined because of that.
[13:53] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): What are the limits in your city regarding a slave touching an original document? Are there limits?
[13:58] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I'm overly protective of documents.  If I could, I would make it where no one touches it  but atlas  that's not possible.    Taking a document and giving a slave strict orders to run it swiftly to an Ubar  , happens..    If I waltz into the Cylinder of the Scribes and see a slave just standing idly with a document  I'd probably treat her harshly.  It depends on the circumstances.
[13:58] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): "But you wouldn't put them to death."
[13:59] Dexter Winters (sytheking1) is online.
[13:59] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Depends on the circumstance
[13:59] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): or my mood at the time
[14:00] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran) chuckles "And whether the slave had attitude"

[14:04] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Holding a scroll is different from  the slave filling out legal documents.    I personally  wouldn't allow or use a slave to fill out legal documents  of any kind and then put my seal.    I do know it has happen   with the comment of  " It's  my slave, she/he does what I say "  as the reason.
[14:04] zCS # [Mod] prinzensaft Resident [RP] re-attached their meter.
[14:04] ƈɨʟɨӼ Ӽʊռ (xunfu) entered chat range (9.95 m).
[14:05] ƈɨʟɨӼ Ӽʊռ (xunfu) whispers "tal again"
[14:05] Xunfu fr>en Whispers "Tal Again"
[14:05] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): Tal and Welcome
[14:06] ꝀȺɌ (karisima.stein): I think my time is up.  Any other questions?  I want to say thank you for being gentle with me.  This was done last minute  and I will send you the notecard.
[14:06] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): "I agree. It's unnecessary, and makes the work of the scribe suspect
[14:06] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): You did wonderfully well

[14:08] Xunfu fr>en: Yes, Sabayna is missing
[14:08] Trygg Tyran (tryggtyran): I will present map making and then sar can present Tools for Investigation. You have the back up for that, Sar?"
[14:08] zCS # [Mod] prinzensaft Resident switched from [Away] to [RP].
[14:08] Drew Barnard: Am Ambassador must be intellectually nimble and able to respond with grace and ease to unexpected circumstance, sometimes brought upon them unexpectedly. You ably demonstrated your competence, Lady Kar.
