Summary of Discussions & Decisions
The meeting served as a post-mortem analysis of the recent Scribe Summit and planning for future SCoG activities, emphasizing recruitment and standardization.
Scribe Summit Review:
Attendance & Success: The Summit was deemed a significant success, with 33 scribes attending the Friday session—a "first" for the group. Total membership has reached 115.
Lecture Capture: Kati Evans confirmed she captured the lectures and is working on compiling them with all attachments for distribution. Trygg Tyran and Myriam-alyah Spires expressed strong interest in receiving these.
Scheduling Suggestion: Kati suggested adding a 30-minute break midday for future large events, as sitting for too long made it difficult to return to work. Abraham and Kiki agreed to implement breaks for the next event (En'Kara prep).
Venue Competition: Trygg and Abraham agreed that allowing the host (Hermes) to schedule conflicting events (like a dance) during the Scribe Summit's key times was a mistake to be avoided in the future. They will seek a venue that does not compete with the Scribe schedule.
Positive Feedback: Trygg commended the venue and Hermes' management, and thanked him publicly and privately.
Debates and Leadership Issues:
Need for Debaters: The Merchant Magistrate debate fell apart, and the group needs to find confident, articulate debaters, as members are often "afraid of 'losing.'"
Recruitment Strategy: Trygg suggested monitoring future attendance and identifying members who "speak intelligently" to create a list of potential speakers.
Victoria Forstander: Abraham confirmed he would fill in for Victoria and take over her teaching mantle permanently, as she missed sessions due to health (clarifying that he was the one sick, not her, and that he has her notes).
Merchant Magistrate Status: Jewella provided a book reference (Hunters of Gor) showing that Magistrates appointed by City Councils manage most ports, supporting the view that Merchant Magistrates are Scribes. Kati agreed that Merchant Magistrates are Scribes. This topic is still considered important for future debate.
Fogaban: Fogaban prepped the wrong side of his debate topic but was present for two days, and was very positive about the event.
Future Planning & Administration (En'Kara):
Genisian Port: The city that coordinated the last two En'Karas is closing because its organizer is ill. The SCoG needs to know who will take up coordination for the next event.
En'Kara Plan: The group will plan as if there will be a Scribe tent at En'Kara and will link with merchants. They will know the official date/venue in February.
Future Meetings: The group agreed to meet again next week and confirmed they should have the last Wednesday of October off (to avoid too many meetings).
